There are differences between a Mobile Notary, Notary Signing Agent and Remote Online Notary (RON). It’s crucial to understand the distinction. All remote online, mobile notaries and notary signing agents must hold a valid notary commission. But these are the only parallels that are there.

Know the common differences –

Get a stamp and be able to travel

Travel is the only distinction between a mobile notary and a normal notary. Instead of having the customer come to them, a mobile notary commutes to the customer’s location to complete simple notifications. In some states, in addition to the notarisation cost, a mobile notary may also charge travel expenses. Anywhere in the state, they were commissioned as a Notary Public; a Notary can carry out a Mobile Notary service. If you’re interested in working as a mobile notary, find out how much you can charge for travel in your state.

Loans, real estate and more!

Loan documents are notarised by notary signing agents. However, unlike Mobile Notaries, a Notary Signing Agent should be background checked, trained in the specifics of particular Signing Agent tasks and certified before doing Notary Signing Agent work. They may go to the site of the signers to do so. A licence for a closing agent, a title insurance licence or another specialised licensing could also be necessary for some areas. The duties of signing agents vary from state to state.

No need to be physically present

When the signer is physically separated from the Remote Online Notary, they can complete notarial acts through audio-video technology. The Remote Online Notary will authenticate signers’ identities using a live audio-video connection over a secure platform, add digital signatures and stamps to the papers and record the documents using a trusted RON service provider. Not all states permit remote online notarial work. Always confirm whether Remote Online Notary work is permitted and what additional requirements exist with your state’s notary regulatory body.
